About the reading goals

I've seen how much in this sub everyone talks about reading goals and that stuff, a several posts per week, and want to ask if it's helpful for someone or it's just made to obligate yourself reading. If it's the first, I want to know how exactly did it help to you. In the second option is my opinion. I think that obligate myself to reading a book is an useful, wrong thing. I carry a books diary, where I checked everything that I read for the single reason of taking a look to the past. But struggling to make a goal feels wrong to me, idk, what do yo think?
