Books - I have an extra special challenge for you this Christmas. I want to find matching quotes from literature and poetry for each of the presents I've bought...

Dear /r/books,

This year I thought it would be a nice touch if before each person opened a present from me I could read out a short quote to set it up. I'd like quite a range from different forms and styles, and mostly British-centric if possible. Here's the list - suggest any you can think of.

  • Mother: Tea set.
"There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: a Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and the talking over its head. 'Very uncomfortable for the Dormouse,' thought Alice; 'only, as it’s asleep, I suppose it doesn’t mind.'
The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it: 'No room! No room!' they cried out when they saw Alice coming. 'There’s PLENTY of room!' said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large arm-chair at one end of the table."
  • Brother: Deep fat frier.
I'd really like something about Swelter from Gormenghast for this but I can't seem to get the right quote.
  • Cousin 1: Boots
  • Cousin 2: Posters for his new flat.
Maybe something about a gallery. The Hall of Bright Carvings from Gormenghast? You can tell I'm WAY into Gormenghast.
  • Cousin 3: Books (Non-fiction, philosophical)
  • Stepdad: Posh cheese and chocolate.
  • Aunt: Necklace (shared present)
  • Step-uncle: Book (on birds)
  • Nana: I, my brother, and my cousins are each going to visit her and take her out to dinner throughout the year

All suggestions welcome!

Yours faithfully, - /u/dieyoubastards
