Do you plan your reading beforehand and stick to it or do you let the moment decide your next book?

I like starting 'projects', e.g. reading an X amount of books by a certain author, but often get distracted by new books I discover and then abandon my project for those. I'd like to stick more to my projects, but at the same time I don't want to 'suppress' the desire to read a certain book when it comes up, regardless of the project I'm in.

I'm interested in more people's experiences with this typical reader's dilemma.
