I want to get smarter, by reading
So I used to love reading around five years back, my favorite author was Eric Walters, but after I finished all his books I kind of just drifted away from reading and books in general.
Now I’m in a position where I’m somewhat intimidated by how smart some of my classmates can be, for instance one of my class mates has a very wide vocabulary and isn’t afraid to use it. Another is constantly reading. I also find that the smarter people in my grade are all book lovers.
Now academically I’m above average, but I feel like I am yet to reach my full potential. I’m very smart in specific areas, but outside of that I can be very ignorant and sometimes clueless about certain topics.
So I decided this year that I want to become smarter, and read more. Which fortunately for me go hand in hand.
I picked up my first non fiction book called just listen by Mark Goulston, and I’m really enjoying it.
Now my questions to you are;
-
What are some non fiction books that can boost my background knowledge and make me add to random discussions.
-
How can I increase my vocabulary by reading? I mean you hear people say read books to enhance your vocabulary, but how exactly does that work?
-
How can I make sure to remember everything I learned from the books I’ve read, including the vocabulary? For instance one of my goals this year was to increase my vocabulary, but I already forgot most of the words I tried memorizing. I’m afraid it might be the same with reading the book, especially since it’s non fiction which will most likely be less entertaining than other fiction books.

That’s all, thank you so much in advance! I truly hope that I will be very active on this sub this year!
