I’m A New Reader and Accidentally Bought into the Middle of a Series
This has two questions in it.
Background: If anyone is familiar with the series, I recently decided to pick up a book in the Odd Thomas series. However, I was in a rush and didn’t have enough time to research, and didn’t realize it was a series at the time, so I got Brother Odd (what I’ve found out to be the third book).
Question 1: If anyone knows the series, will I still be ok reading this? (I have school reading due in about a week and can’t go out to a bookstore anytime soon enough)
Question 2: I know series can be great, they help readers stay in love with a series, while still giving authors enough time to write each book. However, I found no obvious indication on the book that it was a series until now, when I realize it was a minor detail that was glossed over and worded in a weird fashion. Do you think authors have a responsibility to the more casual reader to list if it’s a series and it’s book number, or do you think it’s the reader’s responsibility to not go so blindly into a book series? Of course you can stray from the specific topic questions, these are just a guideline for the discussion I think we should have.
