Great Authors and the Barrier of Language

Recently I was reading an old Reddit post where someone asked a few questions about Thomas Pynchon and one was "is he one of the greatest authors?" and cited great authors like Tolstoy and William Shakespeare. Someone responded by saying that he was not one of the greatest authors of all time since his work is based in a complicated understanding of the English. Would you argue that an author whose work is tied with a certain language that couldn't he easily translated with the work intact would not be one of the greatest authors of all time, or that it's still possible for them to be one of the greatest authors?
