Have books become more plot-centered?

This past semester, I took a feminist literature course about the "modernism" era of literature. Reading books from the early 20th century, I noticed much of the focus of these popular books centered more around the character's feelings, thoughts through different styles of narration and whatnot. It seems that, nowadays, we have sacrificed some of the extensive characterization for an exciting plot.
What I mean by this is, something crazy has to happen, someone must die at the end; the plot is more romanticized and unrealistic than it once was.
What are your thoughts?
