Heart attack scare and overwhelming anxiety. It’s crushing me.
So yesterday, or I guess on the 20th if you wanna get technical, I took a nap after a long day of errands and a night of very little sleep. I woke up with my left arm bothering me. At first i was fine, just figured I’d slept on it funny, but then it got more intense and felt tight. Needless to say, I began to fear the worst. My dad took my blood pressure and everything was fine, it was just a little high because I was so panicked. But even knowing it wasn’t a heart attack, I still felt anxious. Couple hours later I manage to calm down enough to fall asleep.
The next day I wake up, I’m fine for a while, but then my arm starts bothering me again. And then out of nowhere this heavy weight comes crushing down on top of me, leaving my body feeling like it’s really heavy. I start pacing around and crying, I can barely breathe, and I’m practically screaming because I was terrified and alone at the house.
Dad came home early to check on me and we went to the ER because I just felt like my body was shutting down on itself. Doctor confirms that it’s not a heart attack and not anything heart related. It seems to just be some muscle spasms or something and that my anxiety was amplifying the situation. So he prescribes me some pain meds and muscle relaxers, he also gave me a valium before I left to help with the anxiety.
We go home and I fall asleep because I am so tired. I sleep an ungodly amount of time and wake up around midnight. Everything is fine for a while, but the anxiety has creeped back. I can’t relax or hold still, I feel heavy, and there’s a weight on my chest. I’ve tried everything to calm down. I’ve taken a shower, gone for a walk, played with my puppies, tried to distract myself with video games, movies, and videos I love, done breathing exercises, and done the 54321 coping technique. The breathing exercises and the 54321 technique help for a few minutes, but then Im back to feeling anxious.
I’ve never dealt with anxiety. My sister has all her life, and my dad started to when he tried quitting smoking, but I’ve never dealt with it personally. Now because of this scare, I’ve been suffering and it’s very scary. I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to help make it go away. Do I need to see a doctor to get anxiety meds, or is this something that will eventually go away?
