"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" punctuation. And other books with sparse punctuation.

I picked up "How Stella Got her Groove Back" today, and read about 4 pages. It seems like a fun book, but I found myself really irritated by the lack of punctuation - especially the commas. It reminded me of how I started reading Cormac McCarthy and really wanted to like his books because I always hear such rave reviews, but I gave up a few pages in because I could not stand reading with such sparse punctuation. How do others do it? Does it stop bothering you if you read about 50 pages and really get into the story? Is there any artistic value in not punctuating? I'm just frustrated because I want to read these books and I just can't seem to get over my irritation with the lack of punctuation.
