Peaceful Warrior - what did I miss?

Just recently read "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman. I won't mention any explicit spoilers but I do want to ask for opinions about specific characters so if you haven't read this book yet, you might want to avoid reading any further. I heard it mentioned by a couple of people I admire and decided to check it out. It was an easy read and I finished it within only a few days. This book's cover assures readers that it "changes lives". I found a vague collection of random ideas that were delivered by a condescending, persistently critical, and often petty old man. Socrates repeatedly uses mocking and outright insults to shame his student, with only very few exceptions throughout the entire story.
Clearly this style of teaching and communication has resonated with many thousands (millions?) of other readers. I was just glad to finish the book and get away from a cranky old man intent on calling his student a fool.
What am I missing here?
