Some (perhaps obvious/trite) trips for focusing while reading and reading for longer periods. What helps you?
I've had a hard time focusing in recent years, so I wanted to share what has helped me recently.
-
Track how close you are to the end of a chapter: This really helps me push through the book when I feel like my attention span is telling me to quit. When I finish one chapter, I can more easily move on to another as well.
-
Record yourself reading on your phone: This one is a little weird and definitely narcissistic. I have a hard time not checking my phone and getting stuck on it while reading. If I find myself having an especially difficult time staying off my phone, I'll prop it up nearby and record a time lapse of myself reading. It's kind of entertaining to watch yourself when you're done, and sort of practical too. You can see how you're fidgeting/moving/getting distracted. Additionally, having the camera pointed on you sort of motivates you to focus more.

Read somewhere where it's more difficult for you to get distracted. For me, this is the bath. When I'm in the hot water, in a bathroom where people are less likely to come and talk to me, and relaxed, I can read more and for longer. This also helps with the phone issue.
Once I get started with reading, I can typically keep going, but I have a hard time starting up. These have helped me, so I thought it might help you. I'm also curious as to steps you take to improve your focus/help you focus while reading. I know #2 especially is kind of much, but it helps me and I like it!
