For me, it was The Hungry City Chronicles. The Tom and Hester romance, the building of the story, the utterly original plot, EVERYONE dying...when I hit a Darkling Plain, I wasn't ready for it. I never had really been effected by a book so deeply before, but this one got me. I know Phillip Reeve may not be known, or isn't as popular as some, but please give this series a try. Its YA, but as an adult, its still a good read. Still gets me today as it did when I was in middle school.
