Am I the only one who hated PERSEPOLIS?

‪The art offers nothing interesting and feels very lazy. She could've simply written a novel since it doesn't add anything to the experience of the story anyways.‬

‪An uninteresting plot that really goes nowhere, there's no sense of progress or growth. The story is a simple linear plotline, no foreshadowing, no hook, no cliffhangers, no plot twists, nothing to keep me interested at all. It's really as simple as it gets in terms of constructing a story. This book didn't stir me emotionally or even get me thinking, the ideas and values are so simple. The pacing is completely off too. ‬

I wasn't invested in her life at all, in fact I hated her so much. She's completely unrelatable, she's mentally unstable, narcissistic and super spoiled. During the war and revolution, nobody seems to experience any kind of discomfort. Satrapi's biggest concerns are puberty, owning rock star posters and hiding alcohol during a party. I mean she grew up in an educated, rich and privileged family with western ideologies. She was also mostly a kid throughout the whole story. And then she lived in Europe. She is soooo distant from the suffering and hardships that the people of Iran actually lived through. She is definitely not a prime candidate to educate us on the struggles of Iran's revolution and war.

This book is so condescending to the audience, as if she's smarter and better than us because she's read a page about Marx when she was 8. She even compares him to god at one point - she's a socialist who's completely detached from reality, clearly. She also thinks of herself as a hero. You can tell she's trying really hard to make this book daring, thought-provoking and eye-opening (she probably thinks it is), but it just falls flat on it's face.

If this was the first graphic novel/comic I ever read, I would never touch another one again. The only reason this is so critically acclaimed is because of its liberal, anti-war and pro-Middle Eastern agenda.

IMO It's a terribly written book and doesn't even deserve a fraction of its praise.
