How much can you forgive a book for being "of its time"?

I have just finished reading Casino Royale and while I expected it to be sexist, it was much worse than I thought. The line when I really blanched was "but that the conquest of her body, because of the central privacy in her, would each time have the sweet tang of rape". The reference to rape as being sweet put me off reading the rest of the series.

Would you have been put off by the same thing? Can you forgive a book for being offensive by modern standards because it was written in a different context?
