I'm partway through The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and I'm kind of disappointed?

Recently I was introduced to The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson (what there is of it so far, anyway) and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, as always happens, I devoured it way too fast and was left wanting more. To tide me over, I was recommended The Wheel of Time as a "classic" series in the fantasy genre. I even saw that Brandon Sanderson wrote the end of the series, so I was seriously pumped.

I'm three books deep now, and I'm kind of surprised to find myself not really into it. I think it lacks the depth, continuity, and writing quality that TSA has. By that I mean, each book feels more like a standalone story, much of the conflict stems from characters who are in constant close proximity and who are friendly and open with each other not communicating important information that should naturally come up, and the characters don't seem very developed or even sympathetic. (I admit, I may be spoiled because TSA was impressively good.)

I'm wondering if anyone else had a similar experience. Is this a thing I should just push through because the series gets much better as it goes on, is this just a bad match for me, or was the recommendation bad?

There's 14(!) books in the series, and before I spend $90 more on e-books, I'm hoping someone can tell me that it's worth it.
