Just finished Dennis Lim's DAVID LYNCH: THE MAN FROM ANOTHER PLACE

I loved it and found it to be an especially illuminating biography. Lim is currently Director of Programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, on the selection committee for the New York Film Festival, and a former professor of mine in college. He's a brilliant film critic, and every part of his book that allows him to explain his own opinions on Lynch's films is great, but what I found to be the most beneficial is the way he tracks how Lynch's films were received by the mass culture and how this response can be used as a proxy to estimate the cultural landscape at each one's time of release. Lynch is a great film and TV director (and all-around artist), and his works are often pretty tough to grapple with; Lim's account of each of Lynch's major works and study of how they were received in their times is especially interesting.
