Night of Camp David. I had always (naively) assumed it was written in the Nixon era. It wasn't; it was 1956.
The story, written by 'the grandfather of the political thriller' Fletcher Knebel, tells of a President who is holed up at Camp David, presumably losing his mind, while he considers dropping an atomic bomb on the USSR. It's probably obvious why this has been on my mind lately.
