(Spoilers for Fahrenheit 451) Has Fahrenheit 451 ruined trivia and game shows for anyone else?
So a couple months ago I read Fahrenheit 451 for a language arts project and one of the passages that really struck me was the one where Beatty comes to Guy's house and confronts him about the books and goes on this long tangent about society and whatnot. But the one thing in it that was like super eye opening was the passage "Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of 'facts' they feel stuffed, but absolutely 'brilliant' with information. Then they'll feel they're thinking, they'll get a sense of motion without moving. And they'll be happy, because facts of that sort don't change. Don't give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy". Ever since then whenever I see a trivia show on tv or something I start to think about this quote and then the obligatory 'is society doomed ect.' and I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this. TLDR: basically a quote by captain Beatty ruined trivia shows. PS. Please disregard all grammar and/or spelling issues because I'm on my phone and it ruins my grammar sense.
