Started up a book club with some friends, looking for great "rules" to have our club flourish

I just started up a book club with ~10 of my girlfriends. We tried this before a couple of years ago and it fizzled out so I'm trying to rewrite the "rules" to make it better and I would love any input from people that have seen their book club perpetuate.

Our guidelines are that 5 books from the NYT Best Sellers list of that month in both fiction and non fiction will be chosen and three extra slots will be first come, first serve reccs. So 13 books to choose from every month. There's a doodle sent out at the beginning of the month and everyone has 3 votes, highest voted book wins. We have a month to read it and then we meet the first Monday of the month at someone's home or restaurant to discuss.

We're all friends, mid 20s, and professional women. Because we're choosing off the NYT, the books can sometimes get political which is a bit of an issue because there has been some friction about that beforehand. Our tastes are very different, some preferring fantasy to others' fashion and travel books.

Thanks in advance!
