Thoughts on "The Secret History" by Donna Tarry?
MEANT DONNA TARTT
Found this book randomly in a thrift store for 50 cents and didn't know till afterwards how popular it was when it came out.
SPOILERS Just finished and overall thought it was really good. Had some issues with long sections where it lagged, main character motivation to help after the first murder seemed weak, the reveal of Henry's character towards the end being like a sociopath, and some odd tangents and details that seemed totally unnecessary (Charles getting a cat at the end, the random characters Tartt tried to talk about at end who I had no idea who they were)
However, the writing is excellent and flows nicely. The deep knowledge of Greek lit and poetry was a nice addition. I love/hated all the snobby rich kids. The development of these perfect beings slowly revealing their deep and tragic flaws was so well done. And I think if you have even a basic knowledge of Greek myth and literature (which is all I do) you can get a little extra out of it. Like the beginning telling you the death of bunny like Greek tragedies, the twins "relationship" being very Greek, the mentor-student relationship of Henry and Julian loving each other, and even the contradictory nature of homosexuality in their culture and this book.
Very much enjoyed it and looking forward to reading more Tartt books. What are everyone's thoughts?
