When I was in high school and even now (but less so since I don't get to read a lot), I would never pick books based on recommendations or what was popular.

I would just walk down an aisle, and pick up the first book that caught my attention and the two books on either side of it.

It's how I discovered my favourite author (Douglas Coupland), but it's also how I came to read some really weird books that I don't think I ever would have.

The weirdest book was Evening is the Whole Day by Preeta Samarasan.

Almost 10 years later and I'm still not entirely sure what happened in the book.
