A friend I grew up with most of my childhood has been going through some mental health problems. He is 25 yrs old, and he doesn't go to school, or work and stays in his house for weeks at a time.

My older brother who is also close to him visited him recently, and said he was nervous and uncomfortable with his behaviour. He asked my brother if he wanted a drink, and as he went to get the bottle of water from the fridge, he opened it, left it on the counter and returned empty handed. Confused, my brother kept talking to him ignorning the fact that he totally forgot what he was just doing, and kept trying to speak with him. He wasn't able to get a word out of the guy, and felt sadness that he was a shell of the person he used to be.

Fast forward to this afternoon, I went over to his house with his prior knowledge hoping to see him. He left shortly before I arrived and when I called to ask where he said he had to run some errands.

When I asked if he would be back soon to see me before I left, he said verbatim " Naaah, I can't Im going to be a while you know, with how the busses are and all, Im gonna be a while you know cause Im gonna be gone for a while" It sounded so incoherent and scripted like he didn't know what he was talking about. I offered to pick him up from the store which was around the block and he promptly refused.

I told him I was free for the next few days but he told me politely that he had meetings to attend, and things to do for the next few weeks, all of that being lies.

What could be wrong with my friend, and how can I help. I'm very worried
