Best practice updating a running asp.net core site on with nginx & kestrel?

I'm used to the world of dynamic languages like ruby and php where updating a site was simply throwing up a new version of the file and the site ran.

What is the best practice with asp.net core? If I just updated an image file and add it to the wwwroot folder nothing seems to change on the live site, is this intended behavior?

If I publish the code on my local computer and then update the dll's and everything in it's entirety on the server it usually seems to crash the site until I restart the kestrel process, which makes sense. But this results in downtime, what is the best process of doing this?
