Why is Dapper so popular?

The last post I saw on here talking about ORMs for dotnet core everyone was recommending Dapper. I don't get it. Dapper seems little better than just using a raw SQL connection. I don't care about a lot of fancy things in a database mapper but I must have type safe queries. If I'm not going to have that then I may as well just write everything in stored procs and call those. Can someone enlighten me on what the thinking is here?
