ASP.NET Apps at New Job

Hello all,

I apologize if this is not an appropriate question for this sub. I am a sysadmin who started a new job a few months ago. It is a very small IT team for a non-profit. I have interest in development and have created some apps using Ruby on Rails and one with Node.js but have 0 experience with .NET.

I am trying to wrap my head around our in-house apps. We have one developer who creates back-end web applications. They are simple looking but provide a lot of value to the organization. The front end looks like very simple static aspx pages on Dev and prod IIS servers. Just simple HTML/css/js, no bootstrap/jquery and definitely nothing like react/angular.

The back end looks like it is almost exclusively VisualBasic with a SQL database. Upon starting, I did some reading and asked some questions. .NET Framework or core? WebForms or MVC? The dev and my boss pretty much looked at me like I was crazy and I got no answer. They said they used no frameworks.

The developer is difficult to speak to and I have already introduced a good amount of change by automating some processes with Powershell. This has left me feeling that I should stay in my lane for a while. I would still like to learn everything I can though. Any insight into this? I have started learning C# and plan to move onto ASP.NET via PluralSight. Would that be a good route to become capable of contributing in the future?

Thank you and sorry for the verbosity.
