I've never read sandman and want to get into it (widely considered one of the best comics ever).

I want to get the omnibus pair but I've read that there are other stories associated with the title (out of the 75 issues) like winter's edge and The Wheel for examples (not exclusively those). Should I/How do I collect them? are they good stories? are they mandatory to the plot?
