I'm nearing the end of Book One and I'm sort of interested in watching some of the HBO series as well and I'm wondering how the books/tv show are related. For example, is season 1 essentially book 1?

I want to see the show but at the same time I don't want to have anything in the books spoiled as I would like to experience the story through the books first.

NO SPOILERS PLEASE
