Hey all, Have a possible opportunity for some of you that are currently in college and are looking for some help with your mental health in relation to school. I am a research assistant at Temple University at a research center involving community inclusion for people with serious mental illnesses.

We are in our last phase of a research study (“Distance supported education: A randomized controlled trial”) that is available to all college students in the continental US(Not Alaska or Hawaii-Sorry!!) between the ages of 18 and 50 who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar disorder, or depression that will be spending the next year in school, are receiving mental health services, and want to get help with school in relation to their mental health issues.

The study involves a distance supported education intervention in which a trained supported education specialist from here at Temple will work with you through online communication (Skype, email, texting, etc) for 12 months. Our specialist acts as an all-around support system, and can help from anything related to mental health and school success, from goals to relationships to campus life. The support is really up to you. You can also receive $60 throughout the year for completing 3 separate surveys but I do not recommend that as a primary motivation to join the study.

The only disclaimer is that this is a research intervention study, so there are 2 separate groups and therefore you are chosen randomly to either the specialist group, or a control group (in which you receive some information about going to school with a mental health issue) - but can still complete the surveys and receive the $60 throughout the 12 months.

Personal information from the study would of course be collected, but not released to anyone or published in any way that identifies you. Everything is confidential and that would all be further explained to you if you were to be enrolled. The only outside contact we make is to your healthcare provider to confirm a diagnosis, but that is also with your approval. This study is being done by Dr. Mark Salzer, Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion for Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities. We are a non-profit and are not sponsored by anyone other than a research grant from the federal government (National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation). We are not benefiting in any way other than meeting our goal for enrollment and completing a research project. Research has been approved by an IRB board, and of course this would all be in more official paperwork if you were to show interest.
