Just finished The Stormlight Archive

It's going to be a long post, so bear with me.

On 12th November, two days before the release of Oathbringer, enveloped in all this hype, I decided to give the series a go. I consume books in two formats 99% of the time: kindle or audible.

At that time I had daily commute lasting for about 4 hours, so I figured that listening to the series on a bus would be a nice choice . So I bought the first book on audible.

Two weeks later (thank you, goodreads) I finished the book. After these two weeks I accumulated a decent amount of podcasts I'm subscribed to, so I started catching up on that front. But there were a lot. And I couldn't wait to get back to my man Kaladin. Khaladin..? Kalladhin? As I said, I only listened to the audiobook. (I only realized that the name of the Red Rising protagonist wasn't Darrell when I was reading the reviews after finishing the series).

Three days later, after deleting most of the podcasts instead of listening to them just to get back in Roshar faster, I started The Words of Radiance. Which took me three weeks, because my commute time got dramatically cut down (which I confess made me a little bit sad).

The Oathbringer also took me three weeks. But because the last weeks I spent most of my time at home I had to find something to do while listening to the book, so... I put 22 hours into Euro Truck Simulator (thank you Grey and hello Tims). I had a lot of fun driving around Europe with the graphics on this 2013 game set on minimum so that my potato laptop could run it, while listening to Dalonar (Dalinar..?) fighting the thrill. (Oh my god, the concept of thrill just makes my brain so happy, I don't know why.)

At this point I have to address the fact that I'm not a native speaker, however 100% of my media/entertainment consumption is in English. The reason why I say it is because, as you might have figured out, audio consumption may be a little more difficult than reading. Without kindle's ability to just tap on a new word, I had some part pass me by. At other times, I caught myself not paying attention for the last minute but decided that I haven't missed anything of vital importance.

This fact and the fact that I have a terrible memory for names did backfire, however. After finishing the book I still am not sure about some of the stuff that happened. Namely, I didn't understand what went wrong with Renarin and how he came back from it. Also, I am not sure who Unmade are and how they've taken control of the city. These're just two of the uncertainties I have, but there are more.

But I finished this book an hour ago and am in complete awe. I hated Shallan (Shalan..?) in the first book, but got to love her in the third. The author got rid of most of her wittiness and made her a likable character with her own struggles and, apparently, a Multiple Personality Disorder.

When, close to the end, Adalin was wounded I was sure that Sanderson was about to kill him to resolve the conflict of who gets Shallan. But he didn't. Which I was sooo happy with. I really enjoy the fact that in this book, women are not treated like prize for the main character, but are a character of their own.

So... I'm done with the series. And the thing I want to do the most right now is reread it. On my kindle. But the thing is I almost never reread books. Not once since I've gotten back into reading two years ago. And also, it's a long read. I'm sitting here on the pile of the- books-I-bought-but-haven't-read/listened-to, which is growing at an alarming rate. I have the whole Expanse series (read the first one only so far), not to mention all the non-fiction I try to read in a quest to get smarter. Needless to say, the reread of a 3-book, ~150 hour series would not play well with it.

One more thing. I have a sever case of book hangover.

I blame you, r/books. But damn, I want to reread it. I want to come up with my own conspiracy theories of what's going to happen next like a lot of people on /r/stprmlight_archive. I want to live in this world again. And maybe, before the 4th book is out, I will.

TL;DR: spoiler
