Name for Urban Fantasy without the big 3 tropes?
Hi fellow word nerds,
When I think of Urban Fantasy as a genre, I think of 3 big tropes:
- The grizzled / sarcastic PI-type male protagonist (e.g. Harry Dresden)
- The tough-as-nails female protagonist who falls in love with a supernatural character/creature
- The use of existing monsters or mythologies but in a city setting
What I'm wondering is if there's a name for books that have modern, urban/city settings but which have original fantasy elements and have characters markedly outside the protagonist tropes above.
Examples off the top of my mind that would qualify would be something like Neverwhere and almost A Darker Shade of Magic. Maybe The Magicians too, but there's lots of non-city setting there too so I suppose that's debatable.
I'm thinking Contemporary or Modern Fantasy would be the best fit, even though these feel a little broad to me as genres and don't seem like they're particularly well-adopted.
Any other thoughts on what a good genre for said types of work would be?
