Story by Robert McKee is a fascinating read

I created a goal to read every day this year (25 pages) and I just finished my first book of the year (I had about 100 pages read before the new year for anyone wondering about the math). I also recently became interested in screenwriting and film so this book ended up being Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee.

I so happy I chose this book. It's incredibly dense. McKee goes into incredible detail about the elements of story and how they apply to the screen. He delves into character and actually cites real world movies that are masterful (and not so masterful) in their use of all of these elements.

I found myself reading section after section like I do a novel which surprised me immensely. McKee's style is great and really inviting.

If I had one gripe it's the rigidity that I encountered sometimes. It felt like it was either his way or the highway when it came to some of the points. And McKee tends to philosophize a tad too much at times. But, regardless, I think the book is a great read for anyone trying to tell a good story.

Has anyone read it? What are your thoughts?
