Revisiting a high school favorite
I picked up a new copy of Slaughterhouse-Five earlier, I want to see how my favorite book from high school holds up after nearly four years.
SF was the first book I read after I got out of the hospital after my fourth (and final) suicide attempt, back when I was 16. It was the book that, along with the best English teacher I could've asked for (thanks, Mr. H), rekindled my lost love of reading, and of life. After finishing Slaughterhouse, I dove headfirst into Vonnegut's entire library. Anything of his I could get my hands on, I tore through in a few nights. Now, I'm nearly 3/4 of the way through everything he's written.
January 8 will mark four years since the day I lived. I feel like now is the perfect time to revisit the Slaughterhouse. I'm finally becoming the person I've always wanted to be, Now that I've found my footing, I want to remember what got me here, and I feel like Vonnegut has been an integral part in all that. I'm interested to see if I'll still connect with this book in the same ways I did then. Either way, it'll be a strong way for me to look back and see how much I've grown.
Sorry for length and formatting, I'm on mobile, and a bit teary at the moment. See you all on the other side.
